Book Review – Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin
This was a book that I had my eye on for a while and I was interested to see what it had in store for businesses. I was pleased to see that the book looked at the advertising and marketing of many of the big brands over the last 50 years and how the business model of making your company successful has changed and changed dramatically it has.
Long gone are the days when you just pump money in to TV advertising and sell to the masses.
You need to think about the market you are targeting, look at the key players in your market and offer your customers something that they want. This is something that many companies have still not yet picked up on.
Seth explores ways of establishing yourself in the market place and looks at business models that have worked in doing so. He also explores the ‘playing it safe’ marketing model, which seems strange but it turns out that ‘playing it safe’ is too risky! Sounds mad I know, but once you have read the book you’ll understand why.
Throughout the book Seth challenges you to look at your business model and that of your competitors and see what you can do differently.
It’s about carving out yourself a place in a niche market and getting seen by those that can help drive your business forward.
Seth wants you to be remarkable – in fact if you want to succeed, you NEED to be remarkable.
Relax, this doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel it just means standing out from the crowd.
One great question that the book asks is ‘why do birds fly in formation? Because the birds that follow the leader have an easier flight’. Now, you need to ask yourself ‘Do you want an easy flight or do you want to be at the front?’
No one sets out to be the second best at what they do. Olympic athletes don’t start a race and strive to get a silver medal. I would URGE you to be remarkable!
If you don’t have time to read the book I have put a few highlights below:
- You need a product that people will be fascinated with
- Target those people that will help spread the word
- Ignore the masses – by trying to please everyone, you please no one
- Safe is Risky
So if you want to find out how to get the edge on your competition then have a read of this book.
There are some really insightful ideas in there that push you in a new direction and a new mind set.
