Book Review: Free Marketing: 101 Low and No-Cost Ways to Grow Your Business, Online and Off by Jim Cockrum

So this week I took time out and ready a fairly new book. It’s by marketing guru (I hate using that word, but in this case it is justified) Jim Cockrum.

It’s a really easy read and the book has some great ideas in there. I actually came away with a fair few more ideas than the book offered as it gets your mind thinking in other directions than you would normally start on.

Let me give you a bit of background about Jim. Jim has been marketing online for many years and has refused to spend a vast amount on advertising – and rightly so. This approach has served him well.

So how does he become so successful? Well, he offers value and quality. Quality information and advice that will add value to people’s businesses. Jim is passionate about what he does and it really rubs off.  I came away from the book enthusiastic and full of ideas.

If you don’t have the time to read his book (but I REALLY suggest that you do) learn only this:

  • Over deliver on what your customers want
  • Offer FREE help (sounds mad but it will work)
  • Be Transparent about what you do

These elements should be at the heart of your online business model if you want to establish yourself in the market place. Sounds odd giving stuff away for free but with the internet such a powerful resource for information, your knowledge in your field will be greatly appreciated and this will allow you to build relationships.

This will also allow you to become an authority in your area of interest.

Jim covers many vital elements of online marketing and there are so many things that you can do that other businesses won’t have even thought about.

It is so important that you service people that are looking for what you have to offer, even if they don’t buy off of you initially.

Why?

Well, you only have to look around and see that the whole online world is being geared towards reviews. It’s what people think about you that counts and if they would come back. If you want more proof then have a read of ‘Zero Moment of Truth’ – it’s a FREE PDF that looks at the buying cycle of customers and how they feedback into that cycle depending on their experiences. I’ll review that one soon for those of you that don’t have the time to delve into it.

So that should get you thinking about the various ways of marketing and how you can go about doing it for yourself. You need very little additional skills or technical know-how to do many of these tips that Jim offers up, so there is no reason not to get stuck in.
